A small holiday home in a very simple neo-Provençal style stood on this plot, which the owners wanted revamped and extended so they could make it their main residence. Their budget was modest and they had nothing against contemporary architecture, so although a neo-Provençal style would have been more in keeping with regulations, the architects proposed a modern extension in wood, which would be quicker to build – a distinct advantage as the owners would be living on site during the work. The remit was to renovate the existing slightly dated house, add an extension at both ends and a car port, and reconfigure the terrace around the swimming pool. The pent-roofed extensions frame the original building and break up the roof line, so enlivening the main façade. To make the villa more energy efficient, the roof overhang on this south side has been removed and replaced by a canvas awning that allows the amount of sunlight entering the house to be regulated.

Opinion of jury

"It was important to show that architectural quality doesn't necessarily demand a big budget, that you can produce something worthwhile at little cost. Simply adding a perfectly styled extension has created a spatial quality and liveability far superior to what existed before."
