Villa Clématites flats for seniors (Nice)
Villa Clématites is an apartment block for the elderly on Avenue Saint-Barthélémy in Nice. It has been carefully designed to fit with the varied buildings around it. A small two-story house previously stood on the site, squeezed between two tall façades. The new building, in raw concrete, faces onto the street and onto a courtyard behind. The thick mullions create a play of light and shade. The loggia-balconies on the street side form a kind of second skin. The block comprises eleven single-exposure studio flats and one large dual-exposure apartment. The site is too narrow to allow for a proper closed entrance hall on the ground floor; the architect’s solution is an unusual entry way with direct access to the lift and stairs. The lift goes up to the flat roof, which residents can enjoy as a pleasant, shared outdoor space. This way the project provides functional flats for the elderly along with a shared space conducive to sociability and wellbeing.
The jury’s opinion
“This is not the first time Cyril Chênabeau has won an ArchiCOTE prize. This project really stood out as a building that blends well with its urban surroundings while being of a unique design. Every detail has been considered, right down to the letterboxes.”
