Villa G on Mont Faron responds to the terraced hillside it backs onto. It stands among pine trees, the trees reflected in its windows so that it seems invisible. The new part of the house contrasts with the old and is roofed by a thin concrete slab that juts far out in front. Natural materials reign supreme here: bare stone, raw concrete, a glass wall, a few touches of wood, and the typical local vegetation. The glass wall reflects the distant landscape too, with Toulon bay and the sea horizon. While the garden is a key feature, water is another; in the new part it seems to be everywhere, transforming the pool into a lap pool. The water adds a delicate cool touch, and there seems no boundary between indoors and out. Light reflects off the surface of the pool and spreads its vibrant shifting shapes across the underside of the concrete roof extension. A magical effect. With no unsightly barrier around the pool, there is just the gleaming mirror of the water. This villa celebrates Mediterranean lifestyle, combining bold modernity and unobtrusive modesty for the owners’wellbeing.
The jury’s opinion
“It’s a spare, uncluttered architectural design, which is not always easy to achieve with a detached house. The flat concrete roof and glass walls lend a minimalist air. The way the lap pool wraps around the extension is a clever touch.”
