Multi-specialty medical centre (Le Pontillas, La Salle-les-Alpes)
This facility is a perfect reflection of the IOTA architects’approach, examining needs and opting for unassuming solutions. The design is reassuring, familiar and peaceful. The design is contemporary but also connects with the Guisane valley’s local heritage of mountain architecture. The raw concrete base reinterprets the stone of Alpine buildings with a modern material that is partly locally sourced. This base provides fire-proofing and structural stability in an area prone to earth tremors, and is hard-wearing, as befits a building used by the public. Local larch wood has been used in all the details of the façade and interior fittings. The building’s wooden frame comprises roofing, façades, outside corridors and sunscreens, creating rhythm and transparency. The simplicity of the building design, the reinterpretation of vernacular materials, the play of light from its wooden envelope and the big overhanging roof make it a peaceful place. It has won a Gold label under the Bâtiment Durable Méditerranéen scheme.
The jury’s opinion
“We awarded this proposal for its contemporary architectural integration in a medium-altitude mountain setting and its very precise detailing. It is strict in its rhythms and very compact, but nonetheless spacious.”
