Stalls on Allées de la Liberté (Cannes)
These prefabricated stalls (brought to the site by special convoy) enjoy an excellent location, with the harbour and the old town on one side and the Palais des Festivals and Suquet hill on the other. They are designed to blur the boundary between art and architecture, being both practical and artistic. Between them they fulfil four functions: three are street-food stalls, two are home to boules clubs, one houses public toilets, and one houses the site’s technical equipment. They are clad in powder-coated aluminium panels decorated with a criss-cross diamond pattern. The effect is pleasing and modern. When open, they attract the public; when closed, they find their place in the townscape as mysterious art objects. By day, their colour changes with the light; by night, they act as street lighting (by means of light strips) to make the Allées de la Liberté a safer place. They show an innovative approach to sustainable urban construction needs.
The jury’s opinion
“This prize rewards a small-scale project that is almost a design object. In fact it is a highly technical piece of architecture, designed for four different uses, and at the same time fits into its urban surroundings as an attractive aesthetic object.”
