Since 2013 he has been directing impressive productions with the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Opéra de Marseille, a talented orchestra that boosts Marseille's reputation as (more than ever!) a European capital of culture.
An American of Romanian ancestry, Lawrence Foster was conducting young Los Angeles musicians while still in his teens. His musical tastes are broad, from rock to Mozart and jazz to Verdi with musicals along the way. With him at the helm the musicians can show their mettle in a wide range of works – which suits Marseille, the Provençal metropolis whose cosmopolitanism and good humour Mr. Foster appreciates. He is internationally renowned as musical director of opera companies such as Houston and Monte-Carlo and for his participation in the George Enescu Festival, of which he is an ardent champion. He is tireless in sharing his passion for Berlioz, Wagner, Offenbach, Ravel, Fauré, Darius Milhaud, Leonard Bernstein and Belà Bartók. He has rescued many a gem by such neglected composers as Henri Sauguet, Vincent d’Indy, Louise Bertin and Ernest Reyer, whose opera Salammbô he has directed. As proof of his fame, this year alone he will have conducted more than 100 performances. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille performs regularly at the Chorégies d’Orange and Roque d’Anthéron festivals, though not yet at the Festival d’Art Lyrique in Aix-en-Provence. In the meantime the musicians can enjoy the applause all over Europe, in China and, soon, in the USA. Hats off to the Maestro!
