In Les Baux-de-Provence, stone has never been a mere material: it embodies memory, structure, and breath. Born in the Alpilles mountains, shaped by water, wind, and light before being transformed by human hands, it carries within it all the layers of time. It is this material, imbued with memory, that sculptor Audrey Guimard explores in "La Pierre en Résonance" (Stone in Resonance), a monumental open-air exhibition on view from June 4 to October 31, 2026, curated by Clara Le Fort.
The route ascends from the entrance to the village of Les Baux-de-Provence to the Château, passing through squares, listed buildings, esplanades, and ruins. At each stop, a sculpture, fountain, or totem in blond stone, brass, and glass engages in a dialogue with its surroundings, revealing their lines, voids, tensions, and silences. "I conceived each work as a point of tension between permanence and change, between weight and vibration, between density and transparency, receptacle and fragment," explains the artist.
For beyond the artistic gesture, the exhibition brings to life a whole human memory: that of the quarrymen, the builders, the artisans, whose tools left marks, rhythms, and imprints on the stone, echoing both the quarries and the ramparts of the Château. Here, the exhibition imposes nothing on the landscape; it listens to it and reveals it.
With this contemporary creation rooted in its heritage sites, the town of Les Baux-de-Provence reaffirms a clear ambition: to create a dialogue between traces of the past and the forms of today, and to transform the village and its castle into true showcases of creation.
