Rita Ackermann, Mama, Bernard’s response, 2021. Oil, acrylic, china marker and pigment on canvas 188 x 193 cm. / © Thomas Barratt
After an inaugural exhibition dedicated to Louise Bourgeois, the international gallery devotes its space to another woman: Rita Ackermann, born in Budapest in 1968. Having moved to New York, where she now works, the Hungarian artist finds her inspiration in urban culture and the underground music scene. Here she brings together a new set of oil paintings from the Mama series, a homage to her mother, whom she used to call in the morning before starting work in her studio. They explore the interstices between construction and destruction, figuration and abstraction. Ackermann’s painting is like so many sudden apparitions, which refuse to be predicted. Shimmering chaos that questions the person looking about line, colour, and form.
