Tetou Cannes

Tetou's story could well have come to a definitive end in 2018 when the Coastal Law mandated the demolition of the historic restaurant in Golfe-Juan. But that was without taking into account the tenacity of Pierre-Jacques Marquise, great-grandson of the founder Ernest Cirio, known as Tetou, who spent eight years searching for a new location. This year, he found it at the eastern end of the Croisette in Cannes, on the site of the former L'Ecrin beach. Open to the sea and facing the Lérins Islands, the restaurant gives the impression of floating on the water, like a boat. True to its history, it retains its family atmosphere and some of the elements that have forged its identity: the blue and white striped awning, the portrait of Tetou painted by Francis Picabia, the tableware with its navy blue rim, and the bouillabaisse recipe, passed down from generation to generation. Among the new features: a cocktail bar, an expanded lunch menu, and a beach area overlooking the Lérins Islands. When it was founded in 1917, Tetou was just a simple wooden hut on the beach at Golfe-Juan. It was thanks to his famous fish soup that Ernest Cirio won over a local clientele, vacationers, and later, celebrities like Josephine Baker, Léon Blum, and the Rothschild family. After his death in 1940, his daughter Estelle took over and rebuilt the restaurant, which had been damaged by the war. Today, Pierre-Jacques and his son Paul-Loup still source their ingredients from local fishermen and regional producers. The menu features Tetou's signature dishes: grilled lobster, local fish, Niçoise salad, octopus salad, Provençal tomatoes, and desserts made by Pauline, the great-grandmother. Culinary traditions that are perpetuated, like the warm welcome, a hallmark of the house.
