Les ateliers Jeanne Barret
Quartier d’Arenc
Prix Less Is More
Par Maurice Gouiran
Located in the Arenc district, a former industrial area of Marseille, this building has been transformed into a space for artistic experimentation and creation. This setting allowed for a departure from traditional architect-client relationships. The project blends a post-and-beam structure with the fluid, ever-changing uses of the space. The 4x4 meter square grid across three dimensions provides stability and permanence, reflecting the project's evolving timeline. This simple, stable framework uses minimal materials and served as a canvas for artistic appropriation during construction. The 4-meter spans allowed for infill using repurposed materials, promoting self-construction.
The first phase of the project, carried out by professional contractors, included infrastructure, glazing, and the concrete post-and-beam framework. The second phase, completed by artists, involved self-constructed studio spaces. This project successfully balanced the needs of ongoing construction and the cultural programming of the space.
Jury’s Opinion
Jeanne Barret is a miracle of resilience. Urban and social resilience in a neglected neighborhood, threatened by massive redevelopment. Resilience of a workshop from a bygone industry. Resilience of an artists' association that happily inhabits this building, and of architects who have found a very fitting way to intervene. A triple "Less is more": that of a lost and rediscovered village, that of an abandoned and revived building, and that of this delicate and beautiful four-dimensional project with the genius of resourcefulness... In the end, a tremendous benefit for the users of the Ateliers: Thank you, Jeanne!
