Générik Vapeur

The company of street actors turns 40

Générik Vapeur fêtera ses quarante ans en octobre. C’est en effet en 1983 que la cantatrice rock Caty Avram et le comédien d’engins Pierre Berthelot ont créé cette compagnie de théâtre de rue musical.

What a long way this troupe has come over the past four decades. Comprising some twenty artist-technicians whose varied skills range from building all kinds of stage devices to producing musical and theatrical performances, acrobatics and videos, Générik Vapeur creates art in public spaces within urban and rural landscapes. The company, which is based in La Cité des Arts de la Rue in north Marseille, has developed an eclectic repertoire (consisting of a catalogue of registered shows), with more than 150 individual projects to its name and numerous collaborations with international artists. It also likes to share its know-how and techniques, offering artistic support to young creators and emerging artists. Like everyone from Marseille, Générik Vapeur enjoys travelling and meeting other people. The troupe has performed its shows in urban and rural landscapes all over the world, from China to the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Korea, Madagascar, Canada, Morocco, Colombia, Lebanon, Burkina Faso, Turkey and Italy. It will be celebrating its 40th birthday at the start of the summer together alongside Spanish guest performer Xarxa, also a young forty-something, reclaiming the public arena with dance, and offering a book as its 40th anniversary gift!
