  • The third edition of Chroniques, the biennal of digital imagination, will run from 10 November 2022 to 22 January 2023. Coming after Levitation (2018) and Eternity (2020), it will be themed on Night.

Marseille-based Zinc and Aix-based Seconde Nature have been working as “incubators of digital imagination” for many years, promoting contemporary digital creativity and helping people appropriate these technologies to develop their creativity and free their imaginations. The idea of holding an ambitious, recurrent event to showcase the region’s creativity (bringing Aix and Marseille together) probably took shape in 2013, when Marseille was European Capital of Culture. But it was five years before the first event was held, with the promise of a new edition every two years. The third will be themed on Night, forming a trilogy with the first two, which were dedicated to Levitation and Eternity.
The pandemic hasn’t affected the program. Belgium will be the guest of honour this year and the organisers are expecting 70 artists, 400 professionals (a two-day International Digital Arts Market is slated for January 2013), and 100,000 visitors to the 30-odd partner venues in Aix, Marseille, Arles, Avignon and elsewhere. For Mathieu Vabre, co-director of the biennale alongside Céline Berthoumieux, one strong point of this edition is that it’s leaving the traditional venues to reach more people, offering monumental works, interactive works and novel experiences in public places on the opening days in November.
