Histoire et civilisation
In Draguignan, the heart of the Var Department
A new cultural site, what a blessing in these uncertain times !

Ulysse et les sirènes, Etrurie IIe siècle avant J-C. Urne cinéraire marbre blanc. Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Florence (Italie).
In creating this new space, the Var Department has expressed a commitment to bringing culture to everyone everywhere, and to giving it national standing. The recently renovated building in the gardens of the Prefecture is part of an architectural ensemble designed in the 19th century by Esprit Lantoin. It has 650 m2 of space suitable for all types of exhibitions, and its moveable walls, large showcases and high ceilings give scenographers enviable freedom. This exceptional site was designed to house temporary exhibitions organised in partnership with France’s major museums and cultural institutions. The new space is devoted to History and Civilisations, so it is fitting that its opening exhibition ventures out to sea, the Mediterranean Sea - cradle of our civilisations – with Ulysses. Between the cyclops and mermaids, Ulysses, the untiring explorer at the crossroads of legend and history, sets sail against the elements, torn between doubt and certainty, love and filial devotion.
