 REDOLFI GARY 08

«I’ve always been fascinated by the expressive power of form. Working as an interior decorator after fine arts school I learnt to see the home as an extension of the body. When I decided to become a sculptor, after a learning process inspired by masters like Bernini, Auguste Rodin and Constantin Brâncuși, I developed a passion for spherical forms. The sphere is a fundamental form because it is both organic and mathematical; it represents the intimate and the cosmic, the perfect work of creation. When I stopped working with marble I got interested in bronze casting. The cast spheres have to be exactly spherical, with no defect repairs and the metal skin a uniform thickness throughout. Once they have been patinated for colour they blend equally well into the home, the garden or a wild garden.

Artistic notes
To sculpt is also to conquer space and to experience an irrepressible desire for freedom. Through my collaboration with Michel Redolfi I have come to feel the malleability of music and sound. My current work materialises sound vibrations as tree structures, or root systems turned towards the sky. Sound emanating from matter gives them a tectonic dimension, a touch of mystery. Michel Redolfi is a composer specialising in underwater music, and a sound designer. He’s one of the founders of the Groupe de Musique d’Expérimentation de Marseille and has been exploring new fields of expression between form, matter and sound. He also invents sound ambiences for public spaces.»
