The "blue museum" as it's known locally, opened 20 years ago on the banks of the Rhône, near the remains of the Roman circus. It covers Arles' prehistory and history from Neolithic to late Roman times and houses some real gems. Among these are two recent discoveries, a superb bust, supposedly of Julius Caesar, and an incredible Gallo-Roman barge. Until 22 January ancient Arles plays host to Pharaonic Egypt with an exhibition about Khaemweset, fourth son of Ramesses II. Over 100 rare items from the Egyptian collections of the Louvre, the British Museum and other prestigious museums illustrate the daily life of Egypt's elite in the days of Ramesses II. A fascinating glimpse into the heart of one of ancient Egypt's peak periods.
