Winter arrives in Arles with a gust of blustering mistral. No matter, if we wrap up warm we can enjoy its delights to the full. Under a sky of limpid blue, the city recounts its Roman and pre-Roman past and proudly displays its rich and fascinating architectural heritage. But Arles has undergone some great upheavals in recent years as the capital of the Camargue has become a capital of the visual arts. Artists have always loved Arles, and the city returns the favour, bearing witness to our time and its artistic currents through the eyes of photographers. Famous for its "queens" in traditional costume (elected every three years), Arles will soon open a queenly, 56m tower of glass and steel: the Fondation Luma building, proof that the town looks to the artistic future as much as the past.
