The Nice-based naval architect has maintained a passion and this attachment to living things from his weekends spent sailing as a child with his parents to the Lérins Islands and Corsica. He has been self-employed for the past 18 years, after training in England, and has always sought to make shipbuilding greener. “I’ve been through super yachting in Monaco, but there’s a lot of greenwashing for big boats. I changed direction and now have direct clients for sail multihulls. There’s a real demand for small yachts under 24 metres from clients who are increasingly aware of environmental issues,” continues the innovative 40-year-old. He became interested in materials such as flax fibre. But using it is highly polluting as you need plastic moulds and consumables to shape it. Fortabat Yacht Design came up with assembling flat panels as a construction method—no need for moulds. The ECOCAT range of catamarans resulted, with the first 42-foot model launched in March. “Very light, driven by an electric motor up to 6-7 knots, the battery regenerates itself above 10 knots. We have reduced the carbon impact to a minimum by using these bio-sourced materials.”The Côte d’Azur company will be presenting two 27 and 45 footers at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
