Céline Molière

The ingredients of a success story

This is the story of a friendship between neighbours, going back to the time when Emilie Zmaher used to leave her cookies and muffins on Céline Molière's doorstep. The two very yin-yang young women then decided to create the first American-inspired coffee-shop in Nice in 2007. "I first went to Santa Cruz when I was 17 on language exchange. That's how I met my second family. I feel so good there. It's a bit like my Californian Côte d'Azur," rejoices Céline, who was brought up on Friends and American filmography. It comes as no surprise that she wanted to share this atmosphere in her native South of France and beyond. Given that Emilie & the Cool Kids now has 16 branches, it was a great idea and its timing in sync with the market!

Hi, which cookie would you like to taste?

“Of course, we’ve done our own thing with the concept," laughs this Ceram Sophia-Antipolis graduate, who didn’t see herself as a salaried employee. “We opted for good coffee, we are close to Italy after all, and a cookie shop adapted to French tastes.” Emilie, a cake and pastry specialist, created almost all the recipes, and Céline, who didn't cook at the outset, invented the savoury dishes. Any pluses along the way? "For a long time, I played music in a band. Guitar, bass, and vocals. And that's where I had to learn to sync with others", explains this tattooed entrepreneur, who developed her personality in the punk rock world. "I'm often unaware of the obstacles. When Emilie fell in love with Iceland, she came back wanting to move there and open a shop in Reykjavik, it never occurred to me that it was impossible.” From Quimper in Brittany to the Land of Fire and Ice, these third places where it's good to meet up, are like scattered snippets of optimism.

Emilie and the cool kids

A living space and concept store. The brand has several addresses in the Côte d'Azur capital, from the Arénas to Nice Etoile. It has also set up shop in Cannes, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Sophia-Antipolis and Mougins. The warm welcome is reminiscent of the California coast, and the playlist helps to set the mood. Aside from the pastries, hot and cold drinks, you come here to enjoy salads, bagels, toasties, and pancakes. The business, which is developing its franchise network, is focusing on craftsmanship. So everything is made on the spot. The idea is that there is something for everyone: from vegan to gluten-free, from smoothies and light salads to cheddar bagels and avocado-hummus sandwiches. While gourmet snack stops aren’t possible for the moment, takeaways are, of course, still available. For birthdays, weddings and even divorces, the brand has set up a catering service.
