“This airport is a pillar of our region's development”

At my instigation Nice's inhabi-tants voted last 19 February on the privatisation of Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. The result was indisputable: 97.47% of voters rejected it. I chose to consult them because this concerns France's second largest international airport, representing 11.5 million passengers, economic benefits to the value of €7 billion and, directly or indirectly, 65,000 jobs. The airport is therefore of unarguable strategic importance for our region. But the government has decided to sacrifice the Société Aéroportuaire de la Côte d’Azur, to the detriment of all Rivierans. The airport being a pillar of our region's development, I tackled Emmanuel Macron in order to obtain for our local authorities: a guarantee of participation in the future corporation's governance and a say in choosing the future shareholder, that new routes would be opened and that a share of the profits from the sale would be invested in our region. These requests were all accepted but we must remain vigilant as to the fulfilment of these commitments. On 18 April Dominique Estrosi-Sassone presented to the Senate the amendments enabling these gains to be incorporated into the law. Under no circumstances shall I allow the airport to fall into the hands of foreign investors and I will continue to ensure that the interests of our region are respected.
