"How the forms are born" by Manoela Medeiros

Born in 1991, Manoela Medeiros lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Medeiros studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro. In her practice, the artist develops an approach to painting that transcends the specificities of the medium, drawing on sculpture, performance, and installation. Pursuing a hybrid framework for the pictorial, Medeiros interrogates artistic media by going beyond their conventional formats, producing site-specific paintings and installations that explore the relationships between space, time, and the corporeality of art and the viewer. The artist frequently makes direct interventions in exhibition spaces, creating works that emerge from the particularities of the surrounding space, whether material, structural, or in relation to natural and artificial light. His practice thus imbues space with a sense of organicity, making architecture its own body, a body specific to the experience of art. Through a process resembling archaeology, Medeiros engages with the notion of ruins as a spatial indication of the passage of time, undertaking a process that reveals what often remains hidden. The artist scrapes away surfaces—such as the walls of the exhibition space—unveiling the layers of colors and materials used, covered over, and thus forgotten over time. Medeiros seeks to reinvigorate our experience of time by exposing layers—each of which carries the memory of the moment in which it was created—and allowing them to coexist and intersect. In this way, the artist operates in a liminal space between construction and destruction, foregrounding how they can complement, rather than distance themselves from, each other.
