• Monstre culturel

Cultural monster. Initiated by President Georges Pompidou and built three years after the death, the art gallery and cultural centre that bears his name has been amply criticised over the years. And you have to admit, there's nothing conventional about this glass and metal "monster" designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. The lifts, escalators, ventilation shafts and pipes are all on the outside of the building, a network of giant tubes in bright colours, coded red for safety, yellow for electricity, blue for air conditioning and green for fluids. The Georges restaurant at the top of the building, with a 180° view of Paris rooftops, is the perfect place for drinks or to rest your tootsies after trotting round the exhibitions. Right now you can see an exhibition of Marcel Duchamp's paintings entitled La peinture, même, until 5 January.
