Geometry of Silence is the largest monograph ever devoted to the work of Béatrice Helg – presenting a corpus of more than 70 photographs in a refined scenography. It brings together emblematic works and new creations, mainly large-format, from the series Théâtres de la lumière, Esprit froissé, Crépuscule, Éclats, Cosmos, Résonance and Natura, produced over the last 35 years. Swiss photographer Béatrice Helg has established herself as a unique figure in the history of staged photography. Indeed, far from hyperrealist or narrative approaches, the artist developed a specific style in the 1980s, combining space, light and matter, which earned her international recognition. Influenced by the Russian avant-garde and constructivism, passionate about music, sensitive to the notions of space and time, architecture, and the staging of theater and opera, Béatrice Helg creates installations in her studio where sculpture, painting, staging, and especially light interact. She composes installations from recycled materials or materials that she imagines and shapes especially for the shoot. Light becomes the essential material here. It is the medium through which all revelation is possible. Sculptures or ephemeral architectures, her monumental works emerge from the depths of silence, they reveal universes of shadow and light of a strange beauty, as poetic as they are spiritual.
