Tozeur Tunisia

 the walls of Tozeur

The name "The Powerful" is said to be a tribute paid by a Kushite colony to Queen Taousert, wife of Pharaoh Sethi II. We are in the 19th dynasty, in a city that would become a wealthy meeting place for caravans.

Since that distant era, the city has maintained the tradition of making white earth bricks, dried in the sun and then fired, a skill still in use today. Tozeur, a very distant echo of Egyptian origin, became an active trans-Saharan caravan center, whose heavenly beauty was already described by Pliny the Elder and whose wealth was praised by Ibn Khaldoun. Even today, millions of geometric patterns of clay bricks adorn the facades of the citadel, whose alleys adorned with architectural masterpieces are a joy to wander through. Numerous hotels, restaurants, and cafes dot the city for a certain sweetness of life. A peaceful destination whose historical significance will not escape anyone.

Fingers of Light
The superb palm grove bordering the city still lives to the rhythm of clepsydras, hydraulic clocks whose drip-by-drip flow counts time and has been organizing the distribution of watering since the 200th century. This system, established by the poet and mathematician Ibn Chabbat, irrigates the approximately 000 current palm trees, which produce dates, including the colossal Deglet Nour, "finger of light." If you're lucky, or if you provoke it, you can dine in the evening in the palm grove, under a nomadic tent, the table set with pomp to present the delicious southern cuisine served by candlelight. Magical.
