Lovers of modern art will not be disappointed by this exhibition dedicated to the paintings of Maurice Denis (1870-1943) in the 1920s. The artist visited the South of France in 1906, 1913, and 1922, at the height of his career. A Nabi painter, often cited alongside Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard, and Édouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis freed himself from the representation of realistic details, favoring instead the effects of surface. In his works, figures, trees, and landscapes become colorful forms that are both ornamental and spiritual. Seeking inspiration on the shores of the Mediterranean between the two World Wars, his blues and pinks shimmer with the winter light of the French Riviera.
