There are works that need no introduction, only a setting worthy of their grandeur. Puccini's Madama Butterfly is one of them, and the Châteauvallon amphitheater, perched on the heights of Ollioules with the Var sky as its ceiling, offers it the summer evening it deserves.
The Toulon Opera presents a new production of this absolute masterpiece at the end of June, directed by Florent Siaud, a veteran of major European opera houses and demanding scores. Victorien Vanoosten, the Toulon Opera's music director, conducts, his talent for electrifying orchestras being well established. Korean soprano Sunyoung Seo embodies Cio-Cio-San, this all-encompassing character who carries within her the entire tragedy of waiting and abandonment. Opposite her, Lithuanian tenor Edgaras Montvidas, with his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, takes on the role of Pinkerton.
Three acts, 2 hours 50 minutes, and a story that we may know, but which Puccini always makes resonate as if it were the first time.
