In Joliette, the FRAC Sud – The Cité de l'art contemporain opens its 2026 season with a double highlight that questions our way of inhabiting the world. Starting February 7, Two exhibitions engage in a dialogue around the same concern: to rebuild links between humans, nature and the cosmos.
With The Ecology of Relationships – The Forest in Love with the SeaThe FRAC explores contemporary forms of a broader ecological perspective. Curated by Élodie Royer, the exhibition brings together Japanese artists from different generations, from Yoko Ono to Atsuko Tanaka, via Lieko Shiga, Hideki Umezawa or Chikako Yamashirowhose works explore the memory of territories, environmental catastrophes, and the persistence of life. Echoing recent upheavals in Japanese history, particularly after 2011, photographs, installations, performances, and sound pieces invite us to rethink our relationships with ecosystems, landscapes, and communities. The exhibition, conceived in collaboration with Japanese institutions, extends an ongoing reflection on an “ecology of relationships” attentive to the interdependencies between nature, society, and subjectivity.
On the explorations stage, the Brazilian duo Angela Detanico & Rafael Lain unfold Starry Field, an immersive proposal that extends their project presented at the Centre Pompidou as part of the Prix Marcel Duchamp 2024Through video installations, projections and mobiles, the artists continue their research on writing systems and visual languages. Star names, lunar seas, celestial maps The cosmos becomes a subject for graphic and poetic invention. Between scientific rigor and contemplation, their works compose a sensitive cosmology where light, time and language intertwine.
Throughout the season, a cultural program will extend these exhibitions, meetings, performances, and artistic collaborations, further affirming the role of FRAC Sud as a laboratory of ideas and a space for experimentation open to its territory.
