After years of drought, specialty coffee shops are booming on the French Riviera. Nice is finally seeing the emergence of establishments that break the mold of the traditional coffee shop and offer increasingly cool deals, like Alvin's, which recently opened near Port Lympia.
Jackson Fitzgerald, a New Zealander who settled in Nice after stints in New York, London, and Paris, reopened a small café formerly known as Canopée in April 2025. Less is more: mosaic floor, okoumé wood counter, and a few seats for relaxing. The concise menu, focused on essentials, emphasizes quality over quantity: double espresso, cortado, hand-brewed coffee, or flat white, all made with beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, Kenya, or Rwanda, depending on the deliveries from committed roasters in Munich (Stray), Amsterdam (Friedhats), or Paris (Datura).
The only exception to caffeine is the matcha latte, to be combined with cookies from Pompon or croissants from Panera.
