Meeting Kathleen Jones is one of those delightful experiences able to brighten up a day that has started badly! Her hospitality is perfect: comfortable chairs, flowers on the table, tea and coffee, a glass of cool water, titbits to dip into. Her speech is calm, her gestures measured, her attention sincere. In short, a refined moment bearing testimony to an upbringing in which the art of receiving is a perfectly mastered exercise. Scarcely surprising of a person who has made it
her profession! Kathleen Jones started Etiquette & Decorum because she felt a vocation for passing on good manners. For they need to be learnt – she herself trained at a specialist London academy so she might work as a qualified multilingual consultant in International Etiquette and Protocol. Being half Italian, half British, she dealt with a multicultural world and its many issues from childhood (schooling in French in Monaco) to the start of her business career (in international oil).
"Each culture has its own codes of communication that you have to know in order to avoid making faux pas." So in both private and professional spheres – from dinner engagements to contract signings –, knowing and respecting those codes indicates you accept others' differences as an asset that can strengthen the connections between people. And in an ever more restrictive and technological world, frankly that's good for us.
